He's done it all

Why we need to stop begging God and start receiving what He’s already done

He’s done it all, dear sister.

God has done everything we need to have freedom, life, fullness, fruitfulness, peace, joy and everything else we could need - not just in the next life but in this life.

Right here. Right now. We have been given free access to all of this.

So why do we pray as if He hasn’t? As if we have to persuade Him to provide all those things for us. As if He might kindly consider our request, if He’s in the right mood or looks upon us favourably enough.

We ask Him to help us to fight temptation when He says ‘Walk in the Spirit and you will not fulfil the lusts of the flesh’ (Gal 5:16).

We pray for rest when He says that He will give rest to those who come to Him (Matt 11:28).

We ask for peace when He says He will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on Him (Isaiah 26:3) and ‘Great peace have those who love Your law’ (Ps 119:165).

Of course, none of those are ‘bad’ prayers. It’s not wrong to ask God for any of those things. But when we ask in a way that assumes He may or may not grant them to us, depending on how He feels, we are treating God more like a genie than a loving Father who always desire good things for His children.

And we fail to notice that He has already given us all that we need to access these blessings. His word is replete with instructions, promises and truth that shows us how to receive the abundant life He has provided for us, but we so often glaze over and treat these scriptures as nice idioms, rather than powerful truth.

Instead of praying ‘God, please give me perfect peace’...and then continuing to fill your mind with worldly things, choose to fix your mind on Him.

Instead of begging God to help you overcome a certain area of temptation, but then neglecting to walk in the Spirit, read Galatians 5, grapple with what it means to walk in the Spirit, and rejoice that scripture promises that those who walk in the Spirit’ will not fulfil the lusts of the flesh.

Instead of praying ‘Give me strength Lord’, and then turning to holidays, TV and alcohol to relax, take some time to come to the One who promises to give us rest.

It’s not that God hasn’t heard our prayers when we make these requests. Often, it’s that we are not listening to what He’s already told us to do - through the instruction of His Word.

God has already given us everything we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). There is nothing more that He needs to provide for you and me.

What we need, instead, is to learn how to receive it.

We need to come to His word, diligently seek out His instructions and wisdom for how to receive His abundant life, and start to apply it to our lives.

Start fixing our minds on Him. Start coming to Him for rest. Start walking in the Spirit.

Start praying prayers of faith, thanking God for His finished work in our lives, and applying what He has done on the cross, by His Spirit to our lives.

As we do, we will begin to see God work in ways that we haven’t known before. Not because He has finally decided to hear our prayers, or feels more sympathy for us. But because we are coming into alignment with His word and His ways, and His Spirit is able to move and work in our lives powerfully as we do.
